Default 1980 shovelhead

I'm new to this forum so bare with me. I have an 80 shovelhead. My problem is some kind of short . When I run the bike I get about 3 to 6 miles on it when all the electrical goes out. Then in about 15 to 20 seconds later it all come back on for another few miles. What do I do and how do I fix it? HELP please.

Thanks

Hate this kind of thing.
Some things:

Seems like something is adding a load to the electrical system somewhere. You will have to identify where.
OR
When something gets real hot there is a short. Will have to find that.
OR
If you have circuit breakers, one may be weak. If all go bad it will be the main one.
OR
You might not have a load increase if you have a voltage decrease. This would be the charging system.

Good luck. May need a print of the electrices, and a cheap digital multimeter.
OR

A lot of these kinds of things can be found with a good inspection with your eyeballs. Might have to at least take the tank off or side covers, lots of wires there.
