Zacharia,

Problem has been happening since about the 5,000 mile mark. The bike now has about 7,000 or so on it. And now codes that I can tell. Now, I'm not an expert in this area on this bike, but there's no "check engine" light or anything that indicated trouble codes might be stored. Would a light illuminate in the case of a set code?

JC,
I hadn't heard that about the kill switch, but it's worth a look ain't it? Hey, just a word about my qualifications to comment here. First, I'm no bike mechanic! I was a GM factory trained fuel injection/computer command & control mech. This, plus just being a tinkerer gives me an insight into how fuel injection works, but I have to get a good shop manual for the big twin HD's with wiring diagram before I can really get to some good troubleshooting. I do know my way around a Sportster way more than a Softail. My friend has me looking into it because he, like you, is at a loss. That's why I'm on here.

Zacharia, the dealer has tried to look at this problem but says if they can't recreate the fault, they can't fix it. As a mechanic, I do agree that those transient driveability issues are VERY difficult to pin down, but it ain't impossible. The dealer shop has so far done nothing. Now the warranty has run out and with times being like they are, friend is having trouble paying $70/hr x two tech's to have them look at it. They did keep it overnight twice and drive it around town and didn't have any luck getting the bike to malfunction.

I'm still looking...y'all holler if you find something, and I'll do the same!

If it ain't broke...it will be by the time I get done with it!

Did your friend notice any pressure drop in the oil. One of my friends had a brand new motor put into his 06 SE Ultra last summer. Bearing Spun in Cam plate taking out Oil pump and the whole motor. May want to look in the cam chest

Yes you would typically have some kind of indicator that shows a code has been thrown, but it might not remain on all the time. Diagnostic Trouble Codes are what they are called. A google search with that and key word Harley will show you how to pull them if you have them. Owners manual or srevice manual might tell you how to identify if you have thown any codes. I imagine if you had it in for service the techs would have checked that...

2006 & early 2007s' had a bad batch of "defective" kill switches. Replaced the one on my 2007 Heritage about 3 weeks ago. Had the same problem you describe. Fixed. Also, NO Engine Light & NO Codes.

I don't think there have been any oil pressure issues with this bike. Man, this is getting interesting!

Zacharia,
Yea, I'm sure the dealer tech ran his scan for codes. I didn't think, though, about Googling the codes. Good tip. I'm just coming off a week of night shift, so it's going to be a day or two before I get to do any more bike work. I am going to read up on those codes though. Thanks eh!

Kill Switch idea is interesting. Has the bike had internal wiring done on the bars? Some guys cut and splice and some don't deburr the edges of the holes for the inbound and out bound wires.

10-4 on the kill switch. That's not the first time I've heard that the last couple days. It will be the next thing I test though.

Thanks ever so much.
