Cool 4-ways flash rapidly on start up

Afternoon all!

I've got a 2002 Night Train, the 4-ways flash rapidly 6 times upon turning the ignition on. I found a reference to this on a previous thread from 2006 by HDF Tech here:
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...nal-flash.html

However, the solution mentioned (turn on ignition switch, hit both buttons to start 4-ways, wait 10 seconds then turn them off.) when I turn the ignition off, then back on again, I still get the 6 times rapid flash.

I've done the diagnostics check on the speedo and have gotten all clr messages.

This is more annoying than anything; as I am having no obvious problems with lighting, turn signal operation or anything else for that matter.

I'm running stock turn signals and an LED tail light, I've had this set up for 3 years and the problem just started.

Anyone know how to clear this "trouble code" if that's what it is?

Thanks!
Geo

That clears the code, but if there is a fault it will rethrow the code once cleared. Look around somemore and you'll find instructions on how to get it to flash out the code on the turn signals and a list of the codes. Do a search on dtc codes. Newer models display the code on the lcd odometer so I can never remember the procedure.

mine has started doing this too. but i just installed new handlebars and had to use a extended wiring harness. i believe mine has a short in the wiring harness somewhere from running the wires inside the handle bars. maybe you have a wire that has worn the coating off and is now shorting out?

Does this help?
Invoking TSM/TSSM diagnostics
1: Set Run/Stop switch to off
2: Turn ign key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON
3: Press the left turn switch two times and release.
*The signals flash 2 times for a Domestic TSSM
4: Press the right turn switch 1 time and release.
*The signals flash 1 time.
5: Press the right turn switch 1 time and release.
*The signals flash 2 times.
6: Press the right turn switch 1 time and release.
*The signals flash 3 times.
7: Press the left turn switch 1 time and release.
*The signals flash out the trouble codes.
There is a 1.5 sec pause between flashes to distinguish between 1st and 2nd digit of codes.
There is a 4 second pause between codes, then it will loop and repeat codes.
If the light comes on for 4 seconds after invoking test then goes out for good,
there are no codes stored.....test over....turn ignition off.
Wait at least 10 seconds
before turning ignition on again.
8: To clear codes (after repairs) press and hold left turn switch for 4-5 seconds at end of test.
* The signals flash 2 times to confirm your request.
Codes
11= Battery voltage high
21= left turn ouput fault
22= Right turn output fault
25= Ignition enable output high
31= alarm output low
32= alarm output high
34= starter output high
35= accelerometer fault
41= Ignition switch open/low
Possible causes
11= battery voltage >16.0v/battery charger used/voltage regulator fubar'd. (pin 1 / Bn/Gy)
21= bulbs/shorts/bad connections if no voltage on pins 5 or 6 with 4ways on TSSM FUBAR'd
25= should be no voltage present on pin 10 with key off. (Lt Grn/Gy wire on TSSM)
31&32= Middle pin on siren goes low voltage to fire alarm, high voltage to stop.
If the siren responds with 3 chirps instead of 2 the siren battery is fubar'd.
Pin A (Bn/Gy) is positive voltage downstream of the 15amp security fuse.
Pin C (Bk) is ground from pin 12 (Bk) on TSSM
34= Starter relay and coil are grounded via TSSM when disarmed and ignition on.
This code means the ground is from someplace else...short/hot wired..etc.
Starter relay could be fubar'd (voltage present on pin 9)(Tn/Gn) when not starting engine.
35= TSM/TSSM Fubar'd... bank angle and tamper will not function when this code is set.
41= Signals will not flash due to shorts, bad connections/wiring/bulbs/TSSM fubar'd

Smile Rbabos & slickscustoms

Ron,
Thanks for the extensive info! I will try to work through this as soon as I get a chance.

SLICKSCUSTOMS,
Thank you as well, I haven't looked for bare spots, pinches or pulls on any wiring yet. As I mentioned in the original post, I am having no issues while riding it, all lights are working and the bike is running great. That being said I'm thinking (prior to testing) that it may be an internal fault with the TSSM that just hasn't gone completely to Shyte just yet...My limited knowledge tells me a short to ground would cause something not to happen that was supposed to.

Thanks again guys I'll post again when I figure it out.

Default No joy...

Ron,

I followed the instructions and got an error code 31=Alarm output low. The problem is this bike doesn't have an alarm system... I guess I'm going to have to take it to the dealer for action.

Thanks all for your assistance on this

It just means a wire is shorted to ground. That wire is likely behind your fuse box. Its a hassle getting in there to work so the dealer might well be worth saving you the frustration.

Default Thanks!

LILBUDYWIZER,
Thanks for the suggestion I am going to look into it before I take it to the dealer. I've pulled the fuse harness before so I'm not too intimidated about it. I just don't understand how it can throw a code for system I don't have. That would leave me to believe the TSSM is going bad?!

Thanks again for all of your help Gentlemen, I'll post again once I get it fixed on what the actual solution was.

If you have security system you have a Turn Signal & Security Module (TSSM) and if not you have a Turn Signal Module (TSM). If you have a TSSM then you have a connector behind the fuse box for the siren. The wires in that connector are powered just the same with or without the siren. Assuming it's the same wire colors as an '08 Dyna the wires to the connector are black (ground), green/brown (alarm) and brown/green (power). So, presumably, that's green/brown wire is shorted.

With my bike the siren wire was tucked up under the bottom of the fuse box. It's a fairly short wire so if it's shorted it's likely right there at the connector.
