Fire through throttle body

Fire through throttle body
I cannot figure out what happened.... I took the tins off for painting. While I was doing that (2 and a half months), I decided to do some other things:
1. 2 into 1 exhaust
2. throttle cables
3. wash with Simple Green solution to reach the grime on the engine and frame.
When I put it back together, I noticed that it was hard to get the fuel assembly to seat right on the tank flange; I had to push it down a little to start the screws.
Now, when I start it, it fires right up and idles for about 30 seconds and then intermitently coughs fire into the throttle body and eventually dies. It also does not rev without belching.
I have checked for loose plug wires, and I think it is getting enough fuel. Is there any ideas?
Thanks!
