The more you deviate from stock the more likely a hole in the map will develope that the stock ECU will not be able to acount for.

Note that MAP in caps refers to Manifold Air Pressure or Manifold Absolute Pressure and map in lower case refers to a 3D table.

The latest iteration of the BMW boxer HPSport makes approximately 145 hp with a two cylinder 1200cc air/oil cooled engine and is fullly street legal (EU) with full catalyst and all. The boxer being not the most ideal setup either, one would think that BMW has the better EFI. What in the experts opinion is HD missing in the EFI department.

All of the methods of EFI logic developed over the years are just ways to estimate the amount of oxygen that made it into the cylinder and then figuring out how long to hold the injectors open to give the near perfect amount of fuel.

The three most basic types of EFI systems are

Alpha-N Correction___Tables are based on throttle position and RPM (MAP is not in the fueling calc)

Speed Density______ Correction Tables are based on MAP and RPM (MAP is in the fuel calc)

Mass Air Flow_______Correction Tables are based on actual air flow entering the air cleaner and RPM

CR Any EFI system can make HP. A motor is just an air pump that has to have a way to cool itself. More air requires more fuel and more cooling. Without cooling burned pistons and detonation result. The higher the RPM the easier it is to make power but the strength of the spining parts gets to be expensive.

H-D had the ecu loaded with its bootstrap PGM. They didnt fully utilized the antiknock feature of this ecu as it would not pass EPA the way they engineered the bootstrap. Not good. The CAN and KW2000 are other means to get data from the ecu. Sort of a protocol. We have both in the lab.
