Default Spewing gas out overflow

I take my wife out for her once a month drive around the mall parking lot on her 94 883 sportster. I start it up coast down the driveway and it sputters on the road but finally picks up and goes. She fires it up at the parking lot and I notice it is spewing gas out the overflow. I make a run for home and run out of gas within four blocks.

I push it to the gas station and there is gas in the tank. Fill it up and it takes 0.73 gallons out of 2.2 capacity. I fire it up before filling it and it starts. I drive it home after filling it and it runs fine. So where do I start?

Perhaps worth mentioning is the bike sat for about six years prior to this season and has not been run much. Also recently the fuel shut off valve has gotten hard to turn. Thinking perhaps the entire fuel system is in rather nastry shape at this point.

So I was working on it and decided to take a break. I lit up a cigarette and got a big ball of fire. It seemed to burn out pretty quickly. Is that normal or something I should worry about?

Ok wife took the day off yesterday so I had to do wife stuff which strangely does not include working on her bike. I took the ac and intake off. So now I am wondering if it would be best to just take the carb off the bike.

Anyone have any tips on how to get the throttle cables off? I can see the slots the cables slide through. I assume I have to get the casing high enough to clear that. I am having a bit of trouble doing that. I thought before I resort to brute force and crimp the casing I would ask if there is something I am missing.

Hum well loosing the adjusters helped a lot. I got both disconnected but I cannot get the rear one through that groove. I get it is started but it sticks about a half inch down. It is a bear to get to and I am thinking maybe just wait until I have the tank off of it. I am thinking the real fun part will be getting it back on.
