The fuel pump is mounted inside the fuel tank and is cooled by the fuel running through it. When you run the tank dry the fuel pump will run hot and that could cause it to fail.
All of the above is true, but you're not gonna kill your pump by running out of gas once in awhile. People have been doing it in vehicles since the 70's and 80's.
In diesel motors the fuel cools the injectors, without fuel, the compression overheats the nozzle, changing
the spray characteristics into the cylinder.

Both times I was less than a mile from my house. The wife came down with the lawn mower gas canand I put about 1/4 a gallon into my tank and away I went.................to the gas station that is!
I've never understood the theory of picking up junk at the bottom of the tank when you run low on gas.The fuel pump sock filterdoesn't move with the fuel level, it's at the bottom all the time, so if there's junk in the bottom of the tank....seems to me you have as good a chance of picking it up full as empty.
You could clog the injectors with any lose bit of dirt, rust or whatever else may be in the bottom of your tank.
If you've got crud in the bottom of your tank I'd change where I buy my gas. I changed the fuel filter a few months ago and my tank still looks new inside....no dirt.
