Monday - out seeing friend, bike parked on his steep drive, knew i was going to need gas on trip back home

Came out, switched on ignition, fuel light on, strated engine drove off and engine light came on.
Stopped for gas, ignition on, light comes on as usual and goes out
Engine starts light comes on again for 4-5secs and goes out - runs fine all way home

Now has started same each time it starts

ignition on
mgt comes on goes out
engine starts
mgt light comes on for 4-5 secs and goes out
engine runs fine

Oly think I can think of is that fuel feed was interrupted on drive with low fuel and steep drive

Any ideas?

I'm new to this forum. I had the same thing happen with my 07. Took it to dealer and he did a diagnosis on it. Came up with a code that the plug wires had intermitent conection. Wrench replaced wires and no more light. I'm sure there is other codes that can be thrown, but this was my experiance.

That the check engine light comes on a second time and then goes out each time you start says there's currently no problem, but you've got a historical code entry. There are a number of threads on how to check codes; here's one: https://www.hdforums.com/m_43975/tm.htm If you don't clear it, the code will go away on its own after a number of start/stop cycles. But I think you've correctly diagnsed your problem.

The engine management lite was highlighting the fact that........wait for it..........


The trip switch (odometer) was stuck in a closed position!!!!

Worring over nothing thank goodness, but shows what it records
