Default CHECK ENGINE LIGHT QUESTION

I have a 1999 Ultra Classic fuel injected twin cam. 21000 miles. According to theshop manualyour check engine light on the tachshould light for 4 secondswhen the ignition switch is turned on before you start the engine. Mine does that. Once the engine starts it comes on again for about 4 more seconds. I don't think it's suppose to come on a second time when motor starts. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it telling me it has set a code? Bike seems to run fine.

Thanks

You have a logged code, something that happened and did'nt stay active. Maybe low battery, maybe something else. If you want to know you can take it to a dealer or an indy with a reader and get it read and cleared or you can just ignore it for 50 starts and it should clear itself.

Exactly what the dealer told me. My problem is the dealer is 100 miles away. Thanks for the info.

Tanker reset the code yourself, real easy.

ECM CODES
The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
7 - Record the codes.
8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF

I didn't think that worked for MM systems but I have been wrong before.

Default RE: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT QUESTION

following is for 1998 evo fuel inj. road king
must have switch to RUN..code #56 will set for any: bad start/burp/back fire..to erase disco. battery or goes away/resets after about 50 starts..can sometimes pull a fuse if you know which one..
1-turn ignition key switch to ignition and then turn off 1 second after fuel pump stops.
2.repeat #1 again..remember 1 second after pump stops
3.turn ignition key switch to ignition and wait about 8 seconds for a bunch of flashing of the check engine light
it will then stop for 2 seconds..get ready... these are the codes you must count:
it will slowly flash 1,2,3,5....there is NO 4....this is the first digit of the 2 digit code ..so it can only be 1,2,3,5 __ __
then a 2 second pause...then you will get second digit of the 2 digit code..it can only be 1,2,3,4,5,6
remember after the complete 2 digit code is given you will go back to the rapid flash sequence..
there are a total of 15 codes available with this procedure
examples
52,53,54,55 bad news ECM replacement
56 crank/cam sensor
11 throttle sensor
12 barometric 14 engine temp. sensor 15 intake temp sensor
23 and 32 are injectors front/rear
24 coil
33 fuel pump relay--in this case you would not hear the pump but instead waited 3 seconds after the on / off sequence

Thanks guys. Mine would be closer to IM's post as my trip meter is mechanical and speedometer is not electric but driven by front wheel.

Thanks
