Default Speedo problem

Been out for chapter rideout to Stratford on Avon today (about 180 miles round trip) on my '05 Heritage Classic (FLSTCI). On the return trip, the speedo started to play up - at times it was reading correctly then it would drop to 0 and then fluctuate in between. For about 10 seconds, the engine management light came on but then stayed off for the rest of the trip. Apart from the speedo problem, the bike seemed to be running fine.

Stopped about 25 miles from home for a cup of tea. After this stop, the speedo read zero for the rest of the trip. It was dark by now and I was worried that the battery may not be charging but that didn't seem to be the case.

In total, probably rode 50 miles after I first noticed the problem - I suspect that we wouldn't have got that far if the battery wasn't being charged.

The weather was cold with some snow on the way up to Stratford - roads were wet. Not sure if this may have a bearing on the problem.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give

Thanks

Neil

Default RE: Speedo problem

Have you checked the speedo sensor yet? These things are notorious for little particles to land on sensor and throw it out of whack. Try removing the sensor and wiping it off. Very simple to do....just one little allen bolt and it comes right out. When you have it removed see if there is any debris on it. If so, wipe it clean and put it back together. I have done it a few times to mine and I know others who have had the same problem and fixed the same way. I can't garuntee that this will fix it but it's one place to look that is pretty easy.

Good Luck!!

Default RE: Speedo problem

I had the exact problem on my '99 Softail. A new voltage regulator fixed the problem.
