yso191, maybe try an octane booster and see if you are still pinging above 50% throttle to determined if it is the gas u r getting

Steve will be the first to tell you that the Xied's or the IED's are not a replacement for a professionally tuned bike. They were designed to globally richen the AFR tables while in closed loop. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. They were not designed at all to eliminate pinging. There is no canned map or add on device that will work perfectly without being tuned. My choice is Direct Link, SERT,SEST, or MasterTune and a good dyno tune. No more heat, ping and a great driving bike. This of course is my humble opinion.

I never get pinging when I use the gas thats available locally(sw oh.),however while riding in the smokies and using name brand gas I picked up a light pinging on 1 tank of gas. This leads me to believe that the octane levels can vary in different locations. For the price we pay for gas you would think the quality would be consistent nationwide but it's not.

IMHO, adding a tuner WITHOUT having it dynoed at the time, is likely a waste of good $$! The full potential of the tuner can not be met without the dyno, hence the bike isn't going to perform to it's optimal ability!

As for ping, I experience the same thing from day one! I now have a new upgraded OEM DL from HD which has helped quite a bit, another secret is to not roll on the throttle hard all at once, but rather roll it on a little slower. You will notice a big difference.

Having one of my senior moments, what is a DL?

If you get ping with XiED, you will get even more ping without them. My experience: not to roll on the trottle hard at low rpm. Even old shovelheads are killed that way. It took me 2000 miles to live with the fact that my Bones has a six-speed gearbox, and I have to use it. Max torque is reached at 3300 rpm, full trottle at 2500 rpm is something from the past. Don't strangle it, let it breathe. Even shifting gears at low rpm gives more noise and trouble in the gearbox.
About IED and dyno? IED is a low budget solution for a simple problem, low AFR. Why would someone that wants to spend only a few dollars on a solution, spent hundreds of dollars on a dyno? The dyno type of owner is looking for best performance, and wants to pay for it. The IED kind of guy thinks he has paid enough for the bike, and wants to drive it the way it is, without the AFR restrictions. Just my opinion.
