Default Replacing the AIR Filter

I have a 2007 Softail Heritage Classic with 7500 miles on it. I don't plan on any modifications unless forced to (damage or such) but after reading all the programming articles for the EFI I'd like to know is it necessary to have H-D dealer reprogram the EFI just for installing a K&N or Amsoil airfilter versas replacing it with a std. H-D filter? Or is it even worth it to put something other than stock?? I really don't care much for more power as I'm 150 lbs, mostly tour alone (sometimes with the lady) and I have a ZX-11 Ninja that's good for 180-185 mph anyway. I love both bikes for what they are meant to be. Any help or advice would be appreciated. This is my first H-D, by the way, and I dearly LOVE IT! Good to be here, except it was 14 below zero and I can't ride yet, here in N.MO.

Based on what you said, just use the stock Air filter. Don't waste your money if you aren't doing pipes at the same time, not much to be had here. When going to a K&N or SE filter, you not only replace the filter, but the entire air cleaner back plate and all to allow more air in, if you put just a filter in your exiting housing, not really doing anything because it is restricted before it ever gets there.

Air filter replacement is not the same as intake replacement.
You can put in whatever filter you want without problems to the tuning.

Rhubarb can you elaborate on that please. I thought an air cleaner was part of the intake system. If you change an air filter that increases the CFM's isn't the fuel mixture going to run leaner?

Replacing the air filter may flow a little better, especially if the old one is clogged.
Replacing the air intake (air cleaner, intake, backing plate, whatever you prefer to call it) will allow for more flow if you use a high performance one.
OP was asking about dumping the paper filter and putting in a cotton/oil filter. Sure if flows a little better, but the restriction is at the intake.

So, if he just replaces the filter, there is nothing to worry about.
