Quick update. I pulled the carb and was able to see the butterfly plate was definitely not closed all the way. I'm going to do the basic rebuild with new mix jet and diaphragm...etc...clean hi and lo jets reassemble and adj the cables. I'll update when reassembled. Looking forward to getting it going. Thanks all. V

With the carb off, unscrew the idle screw to see if it closes all the way. It should. If not I'd look at a damaged throttle shaft and bell crank pulley. The throttle shaft can crack also so can the butterfly valve. Screws can come loose and the possibility that the butterfly valve was installed wrong before is possible..

have you attempted to adjust the idle speed with the idle speed screw?
how are you getting your rpm data?

I have a tach on the bike. I have the S&S instructions. I only have it set to factory spec to start and have it idle. Further instructions say to warm it up to operating temp. Adj idle down to 1000 rpm then other stuff w the mixture to have the bike start to sputter and so on. Didn't get to that yet. My batt keeps going dead so I have recharge it every time I do work on it. So I have to check the charging sys or get a new batt. Also....Is the carb adjusted differently w the Tunderjet mod I have?

I think yes...I just adjusted it in the steps to set the carb to factory spec.(2 turns CC from seated) or to get it started then continue tuning while running. I didn't continue yet.

you need to get your electrical things worked out,,,,if the ignition system is failing due to low voltage, you are going to chase your tail on multiple levels. get the elcetrics worked out then go back to the running/idle speed issue.

The batt checks out good. Sort of a paradox...gotta keep the engine running while I check the output of the charging sys. Before the batt dies on me. Will the bike run if the batt gets low while its running if the charging sys is not charging g it? Getting there!
Thanks V

ts not a paradox.
charge and load test the battery. once this is in order, next step/
check charging system output. if it's not in spec13.5-14.4 or so, there is only a limited number of things wrong. bad stater, bad voltage regulator or a wiring issue, or a combo of the 3.
one step at a time. the igintion system will continue to work untill the battery can no longer supply enough voltage,,,,this usually indicates a charging system issue.
first things first.
