Do intake seals while the carb was off? Sure you got the all the little goodies back in the carb same as they came out ? Mess with the needle in the slide any ?

One more thing it's very easy to pinch the diaphragm on the carb slide putting the cap back on.

did you remove the emulsion tube/main jet holder? the is a little thing in there that guides the needle as it goes up in down, if you left it out or it isn't in right, the bike will do all kinda of wierd ****.
being a 2000 you might have a crank position sensor issue as well. get your manual and let us know what you come up with!

Agree...The symptoms the OP is experiencing point directly to the needle jet, it is in upside down....

-emulsion tube/main jet holder thingy. I just went through the carb again and found that I had put it in upside down!

also, after watching some videos, I realized that I hadn’t really cleared out the pilot jet circuit in the carb body, so I ran a good deal of carburetor cleaner and compressed air through that as well.

Put everything back together, slapped it on the bike, and she’s running great! No more cutting out on long uphill grades, no weird coughing/sputtering at any throttle position!

thanks to everyone who replied with your ideas.

TwiZted, marcodarq, and Dan89, y’all were on it. I was about to throw in the towel and take it to the shop. Thanks for saving me a weekend of frustration and a big mechanic bill.
