Best Quality Starter For 08 Touring?
#11
Swell...
Have you tried bumpstarting the bike? Have you looked in the primary? Have you pulled the starter out and tried testiung it? I've read before where a fellow bought a starter, didn't solve anything - finally opened the primary and the rotor had nuked the magnets and chunks were in the stator and preventing the motor from spinning.
More corrective maintenance, that's all I need!
Ah, Harley... like a boat, the 'hole in the ocean', you never fill, financially.

A clunking noise when you push the button, a sound like a ballpeen hammer hitting the primary.
I understand it's due to a design flaw the 07's and 08's have, a compensator issue, this is my reasoning for wanting to replace it with a good quality aftermarket starter instead of just another Harley starter...

You need to get inside the primary and look around before you start throwing parts at it.

Like other mentioned it's most likely compensator have had few replaced on my 07. Those compensator were garbage and that part # is obsolete I think. Took few years HD to solve that problem. Shop changed the starter with HD heavy duty one once.. Bike was under extended warranty I had to cough up 50 buks quite few times. Don't remember exactly I think they had to replace primmary bearings couple times due to all the banging and danging in the primmary. But I still put over 100K miles on it before traded it in.
