Has anyone installed a set of aftermarket cams using a Harley tuner, in my case SEPST, and had any luck dialing them in with Smart/Auto Tune sessions? No dyno, and obviously no base map since Harley doesn't provide maps for non Harley cams.

If so, I would assume you have to find a map for Harley cams that is close to the specs of your aftermarket cams. What exactly should you be trying to match up? I've tried comparing a few, between lift, duration, opening, closing, overlap, it's difficult to determine the definition of what is close enough. If my bike was carbed it wouldn't be an issue but its EFI 2007 FLH

Match up cam timing as close as possible. Lift can be fixed with VE. Compression can be fixed with timing and fuel. The cam timing greatly affects the Manifold Absolute Pressure readings that the ECM uses to control the fueling and timing. If anything shoot for intake opening and exhaust closing, but the closer you get to both opening and closing the better.

Assuming you talking the Pro Super Tuner not the Street Tuner. I would pass on the Street Tuner for what you are doing.

 

Thanks Ed, to be clear, when talking about cam timing you're referring to open/close? And yes, I use the orange Pro Super Tuner for smart tune sessions followed by running the results through My Tune as well.

Just had a quick look. For example S&S has nothing with similar timing to any HD cams. Just wondered if it was possible to find HD maps close enough to do smart tune sessions. Looks like the answer is no. I was just curious. Subject comes up once in while from people with HD tuners that want to try non HD offerings.

If your map reading is way off at idle you have not picked the right map.

 

Yes I have.
The SE 204 base worked great for S&S 570s as is evident by my MAP at idle being 32-34kPa. So the crank tooth setting is good. Smart tune works quite well. As well as any other tuner. Just takes patience and understanding of the process. Reading logs etc.

Normally I would think these cam timings are too dissimilar to use the same map. How close is close enough and how far is too far, that's the issue I'm having when trying to find cam specs similar to HD cams. I would have thought exhaust closings of 20 vs 08 would be too different? 570 comes on too late for my style of riding, 3200rpm anyway.

 

The 570s come on at 2800 and pull to 5800. I did install .030 head gaskets which put my CCP right at 200psi. Doesn't get any better. Without it it was still 190.

The 204 map was close enough in that the crank tooth setting was good. I would've liked closer timing events too but my map at idle being in the low 30s is what's important here and allowed me to tune it quite nicely. The 204s actual timing table changed considerably. Remember they have 8° advance ground into the cam.

You can always look at calibrations from different tuning manufacture and cut and paste those timing tables into your. That will get you started in the timing department anyway.

 

If nothing is close, the orange box can be used with a dyno and get good results, then could fine tune from there. Even the best dyno and dyno operator just gets you close
