My 2016 Fat Boy worked just fine till last weekend. I was riding list Sunday. Today I tried to start it, and nothing happens.

When I turn on the ignition switch, all lights go on/off as usual.

When I turn on the Run switch, I can hear the fuel pump hiss, just like usual.

When I press Start key – nothing happens, not a sound.



So far, I checked the battery and fuses – all good.

I checked diagnostic codes and found B2116 (Fuel pump output open), B1211 (Fuel Sender Shorted High / Open) and B2253 (Low Beam Switch Stuck).

I reset the codes and only B2253 comes back.



I am no sure what else to try. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

 

At the moment my main hypothesis is the failed Start switch.
I could check it... if I know which wire to look for. I have the right hand control wiring diagram.
Any suggestion, which wire would represent the actual Start switch?
I assume this must be on/off action. That means I should be able to check the voltage of that very wire while pressing... but in the pair with what? Sensor Ground (Black)?

I'd check the connector on the BCM.

 

I think I'll try that. Although to get access to the BCM I'd have to disassemble half of the bike.

I didn't know that. It is possible that the connector is not completely seated tho.. Maybe check the grounds? See if there is some way to seat the connector without puling things a part?

 

Further investigation.
Since I am unable to hear a click when I press the Start button, chances are the Starter Solenoid either not getting a signal from BCM, or the solenoid itself is in the stuck position (or dead).
In according to the wiring diagram, only one wire is coming to the solenoid. Presumably, the common ground is used in pair.

Solenoid wire is hard to reach without major bike disassembling but at glance it looks like I should be able to put a piece of wire to touch the connector and thus measure voltage when the Start button is depressed.
If the voltage is coming then the issue is within the solenoid. However, if no voltage, then there can be two possible problems and that can be messy:
1. Connection from the Start switch to BCM; or
2. Connection from the BCM to Starter Solenoid.

 

Just from positive of battery to starter solenoid. If it clicks and spins. Problem is somewhere else. Check voltage at stock plug at solenoid. Do you have 12 volts when pushing starter button? Do you have 12 going to handle bar controls. Can be checked at control connector. Same connector can be jumped to test start button. Some basic trouble shooting.

 

I believe the Start button feeds CAN bus which is a signal that goes to BCM, but I am not sure if this is represented as voltage.
Unfortunately, the Handlebar Control module is all sealed - I would not be able to measure the voltage unless I measure it on the Control Module circuit itself.

If you are running the original battery, it's possible that it might have died.. It provides just enough current to power the fuel pump.

IIRC You should be able to unplug the solenoid wire from the starter. It's under the oil tank and accessible.. Was able to do it on Evo softails.

Yeah, You won't be able to diagnose the start button without a can buss scanning tool...
