these are quite reliable but doodoo can happen. these have a built in over current protection and will shut down but a key switch cycle will reset it. if it keeps shutting down, main suspect is the coil or short in wiring. since 2001, i had one to go south but i drove it pretty hard being set at 7.5k in the mechanical position, aka no voes. it also was firing dual plug head system.
if you want no bells and whistles, you can go mechanical advance and a compu-fire system, been running on in my 1974ch since 1975 and never missed a beat and it too ran the 7.5k redline. i did have to change out one mechanical advance though but the machine has nearly 200k miles on the clock.
