The Belkin 5U109 (you can find them on-line for less than $25) definitely works. If you don't want to buy them on-line I think Staples may carry them so give your local Staples a call to see if they have them in stock. I bought this particular adapter after seeing posts from other folks that it did work with Windows XP and the SERT. People have reported problems with other USB-to-serial adapters. Also, the Belkin has little LED's on it so you can see if it is properly connected and communicating.

One other thing to check. Go into control panel, performance and maintenance, system, hardware, device manager, ports, and make sure the adapter is connected to the com port you are trying to assign using the SERT. I do think you are right that it is the adapter but just in case...

Thanks Wags

I'll give Staples a check. Luckily my tuner has a couple of high dollar ones that seem to work perfect for him

but i'll have to get a set for my own

now i'm getting annoyed/nervous

i went to best buy and bought a solid cord, serial to usb for like $36

install the drivers, yada yada. Go to control panel>hardware devices> and its showing up but under "COM 10" no matter what usb port I plug into, its always COM10 and I can't find a way to change that

In the ECM Program when you have to select a com, it goes from COM1-COM8. Only COM5 is dark for selection, the rest are faint and you can't select them. COM5 wont find anything btw.

So I need to get the computer to make this either COM1-COM8 or it wont work I guess

so again, she wont even let me connect to read the VIN etc

whata I do?

ok, take a deep breath...

Go to device manager (control panel, performance and maintenance, system, hardware, device manager, ports) click on the plus sign next to ports and find your adapter in the list. Right click on the adapter and select properties. Click on port settings and then advanced. You will see a box in the lower left of the next screen where you can select the com port. I would use the lowest number above 3 that is not beings used, like 4 or 5. Now when you go into SERT select the same com port number.

Hmm...check these setting in theport settingsmenu -

Bits per second - 128000
Data bits - 8
Parity - None
Stop bits - 1
Flow control - None

on the advanced screen check use FIFO buffers and make set the two sliders to high and select COM 4.

Make sure that you "OK" out of all those menus and then check to make sure that (COM 4) shows up next to the adapter under ports.

At that point you need to connect everything to the bike and make sure you turn on the ignition and flip the run switch to on (do not start engine). Wait 10 seconds then make sure to select COM 4 and see if you can connect.

same error messages,

i did switch to COM4, only difference was my bits/sec was at 9600 or something, I changed it to 128000

I'm not missing anything am I? I mean I'm plugged into the bike, the only other thing I see in there is a weatherpack plugged into this square part with H-D P/N 68956-07...whatever that is

what the heck! lol
