Cool Air Cleaner for 2016 103HO

Air Cleaner for 103HO 2016 Fat Boy

I'm wondering if or not to change the stock air filter on the 103HO ? I have Vance & Hines slip-ons and nothing else.

Q1. Harley says the 103HO already has a good air cleaner, but then suggest a new one would create great gains, how come if it is so good to start with ? http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...-throttle-body

Q2. On the image above the new power curve appears to be heading towards a negative gain below 3,000 rpm, where I spend most of my time ?

Q3. Finally the DJ power curves here suggest there is very little difference between the stock 103HO and the upgraded air filter, sort of confirming the little difference ? But then how do HD claim such great power increases in the link above ? Thanks to Gordon61 for pointing this out.

Thanks for your patience guys

Dave

oops, I've led you astray there (blush) sorry ...part number 29400233 looks like the stage 1 A/C for a stock 50mm throttle body (you don't have a CVO do you?)

It doesn't show what happens below 3000 so we would just be guessing ...the two lines may just merge rather than losing anything

It was the negligible difference between the VE tables between the 2 DJ base maps that had me wondering about the stock filters on the 2016. The relatively minor differences didn't seem to be where I might have thought better airflow would come into effect, but the Pro's that look at these day in and day out know WAAY more than me.

We didn't discuss the graph but, if you believe it, I suspect it is for a whole stage 1 not just the A/C

Someone with a 2016 or experience there will be better placed to help than my wittering on tho

cheers

Cool

Hi Gordon, HD USA says it is the right one. And the 103HO is fitted to my bike.

I too wondered if it was the complete stage 1 including re-mapping ? But then that would be very misleading ?

Regards Dave

I think that dyno graph is for the complete stage 1 tune. The 103HO already comes with a Ventilator air cleaner assembly (at least my Lowrider does, which is essentially a stage 1 AC), so I don't think one would gain almost 7 lb./ft. of torque by simply replacing an already decent AC. I might also add, that graph is essentially what my dealer said to expect with a set of pipes and a simple stage 1 flash. They figured around 102-105 torque with the exhaust and a good dyno tune.....

OK, got that. But I wonder why they recommend that air cleaner when the stock 103HO is good ??

Harley is a money making machine, they want you to spend money on things you don't necessarily need.

Unfortunately, this is probably the correct answer....

Remember the goal of an air filter is 3 things.

1) provide cool air to the motor. Pulling air from the exhaust area or from the cooling fins is stupid.

2) provide clean air to the motor. Open velocity stacks are out of the question.

3) provide smooth air flow to the motor. Look for big, smooth curves.

Most of the filters I see out there forget these basic things.

I like a Harley Heavy Breather type design. http://www.nbs-stl.com/motorcycle/HeavyBreather.JPG

This may be the worst air filter I have ever seen on a Harley. Intake air temps only look acceptable above 65 MPH, They are in the 160 range at idle.

Good thing I don't normally idle a lot. Just curious, what, if any, other air cleaners have you compared this with? And, what method was used to measure the air temperature, and where was the sensor located?
