Maybe this will shut up some of those "should I start on a Honda Rebel or a Sportster?' threads!

At least until inexperience, a busy road, a lunatic in a SUV and a big handful of panic throttle and brake come into play.

And whats your point? Those situations are better handled on a smaller bike? Maybe. I just think a lot of people, like my own brother, who started too small to get the 'feel' or whatever, realized it was dumb, but were stuck with a bike that was not really what they wanted. Happens a lot.

I agree it happens when people buy an expensive starter bike, but a used 500 or 650 that the person can actually reach the ground with their feet on without tipping over because of road camber etc.. plus with a softer power delivery, makes a lot more sense for riding the road the first time, twice round Kroger's car park on a sunday morning may well show you can handle the bike at slow speeds but it does not prepare you for the road.

I agree, unless it's somebody who's not sure if they even want to ride. Why spend big bucks if you figure out riding is not for you.

Noticed that he took a 'retake' when regarding her dirt bike experience, she mentioned that she's a National Champion. ( So much for truth in advertising...)

I would hope she would pick up those techniques quickly....
