Default RPMs Running High

Hi all,

I recently started having an intermittent issue on my 750 where the RPMs will shoot up to over 2,000 when the engine is idling, almost as if the throttle is stuck. This happens in both neutral and first gear.

What's odd is that it doesn't happen all the time sometimes the bike will start and run completely normally. Other times the RPMs will shoot up 15-20 minutes into the ride and just get stuck.

Any idea what might be happening?

Here's a video of what's been happening:

Year of the bike, mileage any work you may have done would help
Have you checked for codes?

That bike use cables not TBW. One cable it go the other is return. Good chance one is sticking and or started to wear. .
First I would carefully open the housing up and lube cables And the bar a little under the grip.

Thanks for the response! 2019 Street Rod 750, 12,700 miles and no work that I've done, though the previous owner added a new exhaust, I believe. That sounds pretty reasonable. I will check the housing and try lubing up the cables and the bar and see if that helps at all.

Haven't checked for codes yet, but that will likely be my next step if this doesn't solve the problem. Many thanks!

All ways Check codes first thing. It is in your best interest to do so.

I'd suggest that you start looking for vacuum leak around the carb and intake manifold and seals,

The fact that it idles up and down without you touching he throttle (to me) excludes a cable issue.

Some EFI bikes may have a high idle if the ignition was turned off before the engine got back to the proper idle RPM and some people claim that than condition can be corrected by turning the ignition OFF and ON three times but I've never had to do it myself.

Let us know what you find.

Has not been a carbed HD sense 2006. The street does not have TBW.
The Street is EFI but uses cables. The Throttle grip and housing is cheap construction and is some what know to get a sticky spot in it. Absent of any codes it is almost a sure bet cables and or grip.
When dealing with a street you have to think outside of the normal for HD.

Just went through this with my 2018 Street Rod. ECM coded with P0507, and a noticeably higher idle. I have a great dealer; he diagnosed the issue as failing intake gaskets. A bit early for that, but things happen. Gaskets replaced for under $200, and the bike is great again.

Always good to check codes first.
If you own a street you have two options. Get good at fixing it your self or sell it HD dealers are backing away for it .
And HD i not to excited about supply parts going forward.

Except I own a Street ROD. Completely different bike, despite a resemblance to the XG. My dealer has two master techs who specialize in Street Rods, and I’ve never had a supply issue. At least not yet. However, if Harley Corporate ever revives the Street Fighter lineup, especially the Bronx, then I’m there.
