Default Has anyone rebuilt their TLE sidecar drum brake?

I am in the process of rebuilding my 96 sidecar's drum brake. I found brake shoes from J&P that will work. The ones I bought are from 1958-1962 bike rear wheel brakes and they are the same as the shoes that are on the sidecar now. I need to rebuild the wheel cylinder, can't find a rebuild kit with the H-D part number 87752-89. Does anyone know if an older (58-62) rebuild kit will work? Anybody know another part number that will work? Thanks, Dave

I tried to order that from Latus and Ronnie's HD online. They both show it being available but after you order it they email back and tell you they don't have it after all.

Call your local HD dealer parts dept and ask them to do a inventory search of other dealership's. If it shows in inventory at another dealer, the parts person can give you the name and phone number of the dealer

Thanks for the suggestion, but I went that route too. My dealer is where I got the part number, there was one listed at a dealer in California, the parts guy there looked for it but they didn't actually have it in their inventory.

No the earlier one will not work as they went to a bigger wheel cylinder and I am guessing it is what you have the later one. I will go look and see if I have a kit if I do I will post back.Have you take the wheel cylinder apart and check it? If it is too pitted you will have to replace it.

Thanks 46U, I haven't taken the cylinder apart yet, one side moves but the other is stuck. I measured the od of the casting, its only a little more than an inch. I found another thread in the brakes tech forum here, if I need to it looks like I may be able to get a replacement cyinder from carquest (part no. EW7568). Thanks again, Dave

Then that must be the early wheel cylinder! I just installed a OEM one on a 59 pan. Yes they are a common cylinder and should be able to get them if they are still made. The kit I have is for later Harley s till disc. You do not need a lot of brakes on the hack just enough to slow it down. If they where too good every time you put on the brakes it would turn right. LOL Mine hack is a 06 and has the disc but it is real small rotor. I prefer the drum as my disc make to much noise but they work fine.

I do not know what you have to pay for a wheel cylinder but Drag Specialties has them or so they say they do. This is out of their 2013 catalog. If you do not mind me asking what do they cost where you are talking about? Where do you live?
