My father-in-law asked me today if he were to get a trike, does he still need to get a motorcycle license?

Yes! I understand a few states have a dedicated Trike license! I would check with my State's DMV to see what is required. Some you can drive with a car license, some with a Trike most are motorcycle.

It's still considered a Motorcycle in New Jersey so, Yes you have to have an MC endorsement on your D/L.

Here in South Corolina you still need a motorcycle license to ride a trike. The state decided to drop the trike endorsement

In almost all states the answer is yes. Many have a three wheel only endorsement also. (My state is one of those).

Have him take one of the MSF courses or Riders Edge. That way he will be able to ride anything.

Default Washington Endorsments

I Washington you need both motorcycle endorsment and three wheel endorsment and must be tested on both.

In California, you can ride a trike (or sidecar version) with a regular car license. But you have to wear a helmet as it is defined as a motorcycle for that reason.
