It is my understanding that Export, CVO and California Models have had the castlytic converter for the last few years.

Harley went converter with about all models for the rest of the states for their 2010 model.

If you have an 09 California bike/trike you have a Cat!

The stage 1 may help but it is by no means a fix.
I was afraid of that! In my mind I could not see how we could take full advantage of slipons and the Stage I AC with the headpipe still plugged up with that Cat.

When you richen up the AFR, "add more fuel" we are probably reducing Cat life also. They will probably start clogging up and run even hotter. I had a bad O2 sensor on a car one time and this is what happened to the converter.

It will be interesting in Oct. to get some feedback from the guys who replace the headpipe with the new fuelmoto catless headpipes. It should get us back to the running characteristics of the 09's.

I guess we call this reverse engineering!

I am a long way from socal but with the budget crisis the state is in, I would bet they don't. That would be an expensive deal to go after the bikes/trikes. Just in case you are thinking about a catomdectomy

Of course in Ky we don't smog nothing and still have not got rid of all the leaded gas yet

Not sure where the cat was put for 2009 but previous years had the cat in the right muffler. My 06 Ultra came with a cat in the right side muffler, never road it with it so I don't know what it was like.

you've got a lean condition that needs to be corrected. Bring it back to the dealer and make them fix it.
Any mods done to the bike?

My 12 Heritage is same, same... Factory tune on it sucks and with just a muffler change turned into a Six Gun popping fest.

Time to Tune that Sucker....

For what it's worth, my '01 Classic (Carbed, no sidecar) pipes blued right away, the nice chrome heat shields hide it, but every one I've ever seen turn colors, rich or lean.
Just my 2¢
One thing that helps and it works, is to spray the inside with heat paint before it turns color. Did it to my 78 FXS with new pipes and they never dis-colored!
