Hunting rear noise

Hunting rear noise
Well I pulled both rear wheels off of my Lehman/Ultraglide searching for noises and found them. Both axles have over a inch of play when rotated before they engage, whatever is in that big black drum rear. I can tell axle bearings are probably gone as well. Is anyone familiar with these drum brake solid rears?. What will happen when I unbolt the 4 flange nuts to remove the axles for new bearings or is the rear too far gone to worry about Bearings?.What's in there?.
