Sometime within the past couple of years I picked up a single Touring stock take-off muffler ... since looking at the pictures below of AFMM3's dad's bike I have been mulling over trying to do something with it ...
The current configuration I am sporting ...
... is a Paughco 'goose cut' 22" muffler ... 'goose cut' apparently means the end of the pipe curves slightly outboard and is cut off at a slight angle ... (a rather subtle effect) ...
I believe the stock Touring take-off muffler I have is 31" or 32" ... I think where my head pipe cuts off is at about the same as AFMM3's father's ... so that the muffler I have would come just about flush with the end of the fender ...
As noted in my post below, I think the larger diameter muffler (with quite a bit more volume) would change the sound of the exhaust and lower the exhaust note ...
However, the muffler I have has a catalytic converter just inside the intake end ... and, of course has the stock internal baffling and deadening material ...
I've been thinking of just cutting the aft end out and removing the stock 'guts' ... and pick up an aftermarket baffle Big City Thunder or Cycle Shack or Rush ... (anyone got any other favorites to recommend) ...
Another observation: the bigger muffler is quite a bit heavier ... maybe after I gut the thing its weight will come down ... should I dispense with sound-absorbing matting or insulation ...?
Although I like the rocket-type fishtail ... I am thinking I just don't have enough clearance under my saddlebag ... also, I'll have to modify the muffler bracket to be able to support the new muffler ... back to the ol' drawing board ....
If anybody's got any ideas or experience to share, I'd be happy to hear it ... THX
