Default mechanical speedo not working

i've been riding an 06 custom softail all summer. the speedo and odometer not working is finally driving me nuts. how do i diagnose what has actually failed and is there a way to repair the one that is on the bike or is this something normally replaced?

thanks.

The speedo is driven by a sensor on the transmission. It could be as simple as the wire from trans to speedo is disconnected/broken, or the sensor has died. If your bike is reasonably close to stock it is worth getting a factory service manual, which should show you what you need to diagnose things.
