ROAD TRIP: DALLAS TO FORT POLK, LA
I'm planning to take a trip from Dallas to Fort Polk, LA during Thanksgiving and wanted to know if anyone has suggestions on the routes that I have planned and any other general suggestions (e.g. road conditions, police, other, etc.).
Option 1 is to take Hwy 175 SE out of Dallas to Athens, take Hwy 69 SE through Lufkin and to Zavalia. Then take Hwy 63 SE to Jasper, and then E on Hwy 63 through Burkeville. Highway 63 then changes to Hwy 8 in LA. Proceed on Hwy 8 E to Hwy 171 and take that S to Hwy 10 E to Fort Polk.
Option 2 is to head E on I-20 to Longview, take Hwy 96 S to Jasper. Then take Hwy 63 as indicated above.
Option 3 is to head E on I-20 to Shreveport, LA and then take Hwy 171 S as indicated above.

FYI - I wound up taking Option 1 below to Fort Polk and the roads were actually pretty good. Some bumpy riding on Hwy 63 E of Jasper, TX where the roads met bridges. Pretty smooth otherwise. Able to cruise at pretty close to 80 most of the way. Didn't run into any problems with running out of gas - never went into my reserve tank (5.2 gallon tank). Approximately 290 miles and covered in just under 5 hours.
