Default 1000 Mile Service

Does anyone have any suggestions about the 1k mile service recommended by HD? I have basic mechanical know-how and don't want to spend the $390 for the dealer to change the oil and check a few bolts. Is there anything else involved in this service that's worth paying for? Thanks.

Your owners manual outlines everything that needs to be done.

X2 on the owners manual and get a torque wrench - harbor freight has an inexpensive one that is pretty accurate

Great, thanks. I have worked on other bikes that I have owned but this is my first HD. Just got my Fat Bob two weekends ago. Didn't know if there was anyting in particular I needed to be aware of or on the look out for. User manual outlines pretty standard stuff.

You can do it. Just follow the service manual. Easy to do. But do keep a service log with date/mileage and receipts for oil and filter to prove the service was done. I would use the HD filter and a motorcycle speced oil for warranty purposes.

Had dealer do 5k service when I first got my bike. Doing 10k service myself. Almost done and haven't run into any problems so far. I've enjoyed doing it. Thinking about doing rear tire myself this off-season. You can do it with basic mechanical know-how, time, and a little patience to understand what you're doing before you do it. Service manual and FixMyHog DVDs have been great. Have at it!!!

Harley makes mention of certain tools and items used in basic servicing such as the special wrench(s) used for adjusting the drive belt deflection. They speify a part number for the tool. Try buying one and they tell you " we are really sorry sir but those tools are only available to our mechanics"
Buy the 60 dollar service manual for your bike and do your own service.
To hell with those rip off dealers who change the oil and kick it out the door for 400 bucks.
Everything Harley does is in increments of 100 dollars.
