I tried using oven cleaner when I burned some plastic on, and it really didn't do much for me... Even got the pipes warm and tried it, and still didn't do much.... I got a can of the Eagle One wadding, and that worked wonders! (although I dont think you are supposed to use it with hot/warm pipes)

I had the same thing happen with the rain suit. No chemical touched it. Used a new razor blade ever so gently and it came off ok with no scratches. I would not use steel wool myself , not that it would scratch when used easy but the steel can rub into the pipe and later rust.

Any petroleum based product...
wet a rag, apply it to the effected area, grab a beer, let it "dissolve" it and wipe off.

I've used anything from gas, kerosene, aerokroil,wd 40...etc and it works..
Just be patient it may take a few times.
