So I went to resurrect my bike from winter storage today. I dusted it off, polished it up, checked the plugs and tire pressure. Then I pulled out the dip stick....no oil. I was like [sm=WTFsgign.gif], it was full when I parked it. I grabbed a flashlight and looked into the oil tank and did see some in the bottom. I called my HD service dept. to ask about this. The tech said to get a flash light and look in the oil tank, if there is oil in the bottom it is ok to start. He said that the oil had leaked into the bottom end and I should start the bike and let it run a bit, shut it off for a bit and continue doing this a couple of times to get the oil system back online.
For a while there I thought I was screwed....but now I know there will be a rumble at the end of this tunnel.
Anyone else have this type of springtime surprize?
You no I guess the oil can drain back into the engine over time but since it's a sort of a dry sump system, sort of speak, I really never thought about it doing that, glad you checked with the expert's for this advice.
Use to happen all the time on my old shovelhead buth I haven't heard of it happening on the newer Harleys. What are you riding? The oil should not leak back into your cases. I'd get it checked out.
probally the check valve, wouldnt think it would leak down on such a new bike tho, at lease you had the brains to call about it. you derserve an at a boy for that! adding more oul could have been prretty messy! fly it and watch it!!
