sportster + 20,000miles

Any idea how much the average cost of the 20,000 mile service usually runs?

Get a manual (if you don't already have one) and do it yourself. Its easy. Manual is $60 at the Stealership. Should cost about $45 to do yourself depending on what kind of oil you go with.

Year of bike would help but 20K is mostly inspection with cable adjust, oil & filter, and a fork oil renew. Will need service manual to know what you're checking for. Do not mess with the EFI equipment or you'll make yourself problems as some require synching properly.
