Bad Bill,

Let us know what you found. The lean condition (backfire) should show itself with a bit of detective investigation - fun stuff... A sweet running engine is simple and a bore; what am I saying!!

BClem,
After going through all of the ignition, I went to the fuel. First was int. gasket change then a spare carb was tried, still no luck!
As said in orig. post ,compression had little/no problems showing.
Anyway, out of sheer desperation I pulled the cam cover for a look.
Inside I found a faulty lifter which had "Hammered" the exh. lobe on the front cyl. An evl 3000 V-Thunder cam, Crane big axle lifters,S.E. crome adj. p-rods installed.... PROBLEM SOLVED AT LAST!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, after I got going this far no need stopping. I went ahead and did the top end along with a fresh coat of wrinkle and a ring gap check.
She is back and better than ever!!!! Thanks for the RE: BClem.
