Using the 2-liter cut up soda bottle trick, same outcome. Kinda works a bit sometimes, other times not so much.

Had the stealer do an oil change years ago (don't remember the reason) and they put on the K&N filter. When I went to take it off it was on so tight the nut broke off when I was trying to loosen it. Of course the filter didn't budge.

 

Boy, Me coming from a EVO to my New 23 Street Glide oil filter I realized Harley took all the "oil filter" working room my EVO had away with the new engine design.
When changing the oil for the first time on my new bike I realized I had a problem as I had already drained my oil and my normal old school filter wrench no longer had room to work.

So I take the new filter and head to the auto parts store and find the "fitted" end cap that goes on my socket wrench, the thing fit the new filter at the store but got back to the house and torqued down and it slipped / stripped and busted my knuckles but good, I'm talking blood! I found out the auto part store end cap wrench looks to fit the Harley brand filter but it will slip under pressure!

A Google search suggested I take that same now stripped filter wrench cap thing and use (2) small self tapping
metal screws and screw through the filter cap and into the filter toward the (2) end and then with my socket wrench it came off easy!

I now have purchased the Harley brand filter end cap wrench and expect it will work next time but I have (2) small self tapping screws handy just in case!

 

They must have put red Loctite on the gasket.

I takes some work to get the HD orange thing to work properly. When it works, it works great.

 

Think the issue here is cup size. Not all cups are created equal. And size here matters. (Now I do realize some of you just got excited..but you are on the wrong forum.

From what I measured, Harley's filter is a 74MM X 14 flats.

If you buy a Ebay Harley, you get a 76MM cup. And that 76 probably has clearance. Even a 903 marked 74 MM X 14 is a tad loose with about a good 0.508MM clearance.

What you need for a Stuck one is a 903-4 (73MM) Now on and older TC, it needs a hacksawed notch on it.


73 MM. Needs a notch on some Harleys but filter is coming off.

76 MM Way too loose on a Harley.

74MM + Clearance. Little loose. Better is available and needs a notch on most Harleys.

 

The reason filters get stuck is because there is no lube on the gasket.

 

Yes. That is what I use. Works great. Works on any size filter. Doesn't crush the filter.

 

That tool wont work unless I remove the oil cooler at the front of the engine, which I'm trying to avoid doing.
