You and your oil, don’t let that Witch have her way.

Cleaning your screen is more important when you have performance modifications. With larger cams, higher valve spring seat pressures and larger cranks your oiling system takes on more stress, heat and the potential of a lifter going bad or other engine issues.. However it’s still an excellent practice to be in. Not to mention you’re only killing time while your oil drains anyway.

Ssarcasm has more beauty when it’s face-to-face. I didn’t say this wasn’t rudimental and entry-level stuff. I just know there’s a lot of people that come on here and obviously know little about maintenance or upkeep on a motorcycle. So I thought I’d share.
As far as What does it do… the witch hat or screen protects your engine from debris getting into your oiling system any farther.. it’s a filter. If you have a part going bad you don’t want metal circulating into your tappers, cam chest, breather gear, bearings… checking the hat may provide you with early warning something wrong. Minimizing the spread.
‘How does it fail.. actually the springs can lose their tension over time and heat cycles. Check ***** can get clogged or even out of shape not sealing causing your bottom end to be over loaded with oil.
What everyone thinks is their own business.

The main reason for failure of the check ball was typically due to water getting into the oil and the ball rusting.. In the case of Pans and early Shovels, the pump ball seat could rust also..

FWIW TCs and M8s won't have a tappet screen as they feed oil through the filter before going anywhere else on the pressure side.. EVOs and earlier had the filter on the motor return side so anything in the oil tank or feed pump wear needed to be trapped if in the lifter passage.
I don't think Knuckleheads or Flatheads had tappet screens as they were solid lifters.
