To Dan89FLSTC, when I say I'm trying to get this bike up to speed I'm really just meaning I'd love to be comfortable at 80 or 90 (100mph max) for a more extended amount of time without having the bike feel like it's going to give out from under me. I definitely have no intentions of making this thing a drag bike, so diving further into tuning seems like it should help some.
I currently have a 45 pilot jet and a 170 main jet and it seems happy with that other than the speed issue of course. RPM also only really wants to get up to maaaaybe 3,500 max so I'm curious to get y'alls input on that. I recently replaced what was a failing ignition module with a Dynatek 2000-HD1 and I have it set to the lowest curve.
I'm open to looking into a new rear sprocket if you think that'll help. I gotta take the rear wheel off anyways since my sprocket bolts came loose yesterday. Still have to count the teeth on the current one. Now tell me though, is it the number of teeth or the diameter of the sprocket that would make an effect? Or both?

Make sure your wheels are absolutely true. Make sure they are balanced. Choose a V rated tire. Make sure your wheel bearings are set up proper and packed well. I’d gear for it to cruise at maybe 3300 or so tops if for long periods you want to cruise above 80.

Whoops! Good catch. The jets I said above are for my sporty project, which does have a CV40. The softail jets are 31 idle and 68 main. From carb tuning I found that it really wants the 31 jet, and then 68 is what I've heard from other folks as being good for Colorado altitude (spark plugs look right, even though I understand we can't tell all that much from spark plugs anymore).
The bike just doesn't feel smooth at higher speeds is what I was getting at (starts to rattle pretty good). Not shaky, just rattles a lot and is at its upper limit at 85 because that's with an open throttle.
For gearing, what recommendations do you have? Are we talking about compensator, rear sprocket, anything else?

I would want a 65T rear pulley to keep the revs down if wanting a smoother ride at 85mph. Around here beating up 60mph blacktops, I would run a 70T rear pulley. I’m not a softail expert but I used to have a 99 heritage, stock everything but baffles opened up and jetted. It had no problems at all running 85 all day, wish I still had it now

Your jetting “could” be right. My money is on a 29.5 and 74…but if the 31 really does feel right, maybe a slightly larger air bleed and a slightly larger main. That way the overlap 2700-3200 doesn’t get too rich.
But hey, your there, we’re not. Sometimes a bike just wants what it wants. How far out from seated is the idle screw? If it’s less than say 1 full turn out that might be an indication of a jet that’s too big.
‘’When you’re rolling at 3000 rp at say 1/3 throttle what happens when you open it? What happens when you close it to a 1/4 turn?

Chasing that with "higher" gearing is not going to help. Period.
