You can buy special Circlip pliers. Snap on,Mac, Mac Master Carr has them. Check Amazon too. They are designed to hold and spread the clips for installation and removal.. As mentioned above cover any holes in the cases so if you drop one they don't fall into the motor.

I use the Kramm-Lox retainers that CP can supply. There's a specific tool that you use to put them in and take them out.

I've never seen circlips with tabs like that... interesting...

I've seen them. Never used them. Didn't see a reason to.
