All my bikes have the lines running under the bike with no filter. No mess and no problems. Stuck a filter on the end of the hose once, clogged up from oil and road debris in and blew the hoses off up by the air cleaner. Would not suggest unless checking it religiously. This occurred after a few hundred miles.

Filter isnt necessary for performance. It is meant to limit oil misting onto the bike and into the environment.
If you use a PCV type breather like Trask CheckM8, or make your own by retrofitting a PCV check valve into the existing crankcase cover, it won't suck air, moisture, and dirt into the sump. Without a check valve, it will when the pistons both go up. So a check valve is a must.
