If the dealer was going to worm out of warranty for Joe doing the 1,000 mile service ( which they can't do as long as you have documentation showing it was done ), what would keep them from trying to worm out of the warranty when Joe or yourself does the next service at 5,000 miles ? With that train of thought you would need to take it to the dealer for all service until the warranty is expired.

The 1k is arguably the most important service you'll do or have done on any given bike. Don't put it off any longer and either do it or have it done. As TriGeezer said above, let your dealer do at least the 1k, but the 5k is a good idea as well unless you know what to look for.

A proper 1,000 mile check takes much longer than 30 minutes, it is not just a 1,000 mile oil change.

Interesting thread. I am approaching my 1k service. The HD dealer will put in synthetic by request. What is the recommendation here?

Stick with what is in the manuals for choice. People have been doing that for 100s of 1000s of miles without any problems.

Stick with service intervals and what the manual suggests for doing the servicing sooner.

Search anywhere for oil threads. You will find loads.

1k in my onion is important because they check for or suppose check for, metal in the oils, loose nuts and bolts and alinements, belt ware just to say maybe more don't know. After that I do everything myself .But its the end of the world if you do it yourself or a indy shop do it for you, just do it.

I wouldn't delay any longer. The 1k service is the most important service for a bike. IF it is performed by a competent, careful mechanic at the HD dealer from whom you purchased the bike, any factory mistakes will be caught and corrected as well as protects your warranty. I also took my bike to the HD dealer from whom I purchased the bike for the 5k service out of an abundance of caution on preserving the warranty and an assumption that any major factory defects would have surfaced by 5k miles. At the 5k service, I brought my own Red Line synthetic fluids for all three holes.

Given the price of a Harley, spending a few extra dollars to insure it is properly assembled and free of major defects seems like a good price to pay.

Get a Service Manual, and bottle of blue Loctite, just start doing this stuff yourself.

You should be fine.

By the 1k miles service, your initial break-in should have occurred. After the initial break-in, I am a believer in synthetic lubricant products in all three holes. If you switch to synthetic lubricants, don't use the HD products. Buy your preferred brand of synthetic lubricants and take them to the dealer to use in your 1k service. Different folks will have different preference for which non-HD brand of synthetic lubricants is best, but most of us agree that you can do much better than HD products. Red Line offers a box of the lubricants needed for each of the three holes plus a fuel additive for the gas tank. You also get some nifty free stuff with the package. By buying the package on-line through Amazon, you get the products at a price that is less than buying them individually plus a box to take them in to the dealer.

Now that my warranty is expired, I will do my own service interval inspections and fluid changes since I have a good set of tools that includes two torque wrenches.
