Sorry Neither was I... In all honesty, I just found it a little comical that's all. With all the knowledgeable help you've posted in this forum I assumed you did... But if you need information on that here's a link It explains it all It's pretty good...

The first two letters of the VIN on the case is the type of bike the motor came in..BM would indicate fat boy, L would indicate it's a 1340 cc motor and X year-99. The rest of the numbers that follow is the actual serial number that that unit or bike came off the line.. A production number, which in this case it was 057,394... That should identically match the last six digits on the VIN on the frame and title.. Hope that helps and again sorry Dan I wasn't trying to bust your *****...

Thanks 98!
So it appears that the engine in the op`s bike is the original unit.

Robert, early in my career I was a production engineer. The numbers on a casting are simply the identification number for that bare unfinished casting. It can subsequently be machined in different ways to provide more than one final product and, in the case of a Harley, be chromed, polished or painted, etc, ending up with several similar items, but each with different part numbers.

Hope that helps!

Are you going to look at every part number on the motorcycle and compare to the manual?

Forget about the part numbers, unless you need to order a part, then get the part number from the manual.
