Default kickbacks suck

i went to start my bike a week ago andas usual i pushed in the compression releases, pulled out the choke, and commenced to thumbing the starter. After about the third revolution, it kicked back and stopped the starter dead. I tried to crank it again and was met with a noise not unlike putting a bumper though a food processer, I had to push statrt it to get it to the dealer, where it cost a little under 800.00 to get fixed (ate the flywheel). anyhoo, its fixed now and i would like to know if there is something i can do to prevent this from happening again?
