98 Roadking won't start. 95 anniversary edition.
I was riding to work yesterday and as I was going down the road I went to change gears and the bike just revved up.I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the bike off and when I tried to start it back up the starter would just spin. It would not engage to turn the motor over. From this information does anybody know where I can go from there? Also I can push the bike forward while it's in gear and the clutch is not pulled in and it feels like it's in neutral but it's not. Would a bad starter clutch allow me to do that? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

If I was to guess I would think you have several items causing your problem.
For example your year has a crank position sensor CONNECTOR on throttle side behind painted side cover that gets loose and will shut motor OFF Due to a loose connection when you hit a bump. Please check it.
The other item is the engine temperature sensor in the front cylinder chimney that when it goes bad causes run away throttle and then almost immediately flops back down. You can overcome that be disconnecting the idle control motor at correct time as a temporary test.
If the starter spins but does not turn motor over then you have a problem at actual starter. Might
Be out of alignment loose or a number of things.
You have multiple issues and the description provided was limited on information.

Thanks for the info and responses.
Thank you all for your input. I will take the cover off tomorrow and inspect inside. I know it is kind of hard to tell what is wrong by my info and not looking at it in person. Here is a little more info. I appreciate all the advice or tips anyone can provide. The bike is all original parts. Has 80,000 miles. When I was riding I did not hear anything pop or break. I was going to shift gears and it made the noise it makes when you miss hitting the gear almost like a grinding noise. After that the bike acted like it was in neutral even though it was in gear. The bike kept running until I turned it off. With the bike off and in gear I could still push the bike forward like it was in neutral. Then when I tried starting it the starter just spun. I am going to take it apart tomorrow when I get off work. Any advice I could get is very much appreciated. Hopefully it is something easy like the chain or belt broke.

Broken chain will usually be a very loud bang and often it exits stage left out through the primary cover, or bunches up and jams either the clutch, locking up the back wheel or the engine sprocket, bringing the engine to a dead halt.
It sounds like you either had the engine sprocket come adrift or sheared the engine sprocket shaft or maybe the gearbox main shaft. But it's all speculation until you pull the primary cover and inspect.
Let us know waht you find.

I agree that the only way to find what is wrong is to remove the primary cover. My bike is a '90 and when I dismantled my clutch a while ago, to install a set of Barnett plates, I found that my pressure plate was breaking up, where the release plate circlip is installed. Mine was a fortunate save, solved with a new pressure plate and circlip (the old one was twisted out of shape). Bear that in mind as you investigate.
