Splitting Lanes: Should it be Legal Everywhere?
#445
Found this from Google:
More than three-quarters of drivers interviewed for a 2012 study conducted by the California Office for Traffic Safety said they thought lane-splitting was unsafe. Almost half thought it was illegal. Two-thirds said they disapproved, and 7% admitted they had swerved to block a motorcycle trying to lane-split.
That's why it will never be legal up here - with those types of numbers it will never pass the State house.
Looks like Cali riders have an image issue.

Pure fact there. It's the only ticket I ever got in the 25 years I had to live there. A left hand turner in my lane I went around on with room for a car and a half. But the CHP right behind me said oh goodie another ticket today. I did it very slow since I knew he was there and there was at least 10 vehicles backed up. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Then the traffic got really congested. Makes a lot of sense!

Bet a dollar that was on RT 3. Just about the only road I will lane split on.

Im seriously going to say if you could NOT share lanes here in CA, YOUR BIKE WOULD OVERHEAT. PERIOD. END OF STORY.
Im not kidding by any means what so ever, if you had to sit in the bumper to bumper traffic with an air cooled bike here it would seriously implode all over the freeway.
You can't argue my point, the law was passed for THIS purpose. If you don't like it, you don't have to live here so it doesn't matter anyway

California also recognizes that the vehicles you are splitting have legal possession of their lanes, not the motorcyclist. Any contact or accident, the liability falls on the motorcyclist.
If the law was passed SPECIFICALLY due to air cooled motors overheating, I guess old Volkswagens and Corvairs can lane split too.
And according to the CHP website, it isn't actually legal: it states that it does not allow or prohibit... not the same as being 'legal' and a specific law that actually protects you.

But I have no problem splitting all the way down 93 or 128 either.
