Splitting Lanes: Should it be Legal Everywhere?
#331
Ca, Vehicle Code Section 22517:
"No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so and can be done without interfering with the movement of such traffic...."
I don't know why people keep insisting it is OK to do this. So many people are commenting here about things they know nothing about, just what they think they know based on their fears and lack of knowledge.
Lane splitting ISN'T flying through traffic at 80mph. Lane spljtting is aboutslowly moving through traffic and being able to stop in time if somebody in a car does something stupid. Again, I have NEVER seen a door open in front of me, and sadly, I have ridden tnrough traffic splitting lanes for hundreds of miles. Perhaps a thousand. I hate it, but it beats the allternative of getting rear-ended. I learned the hard way that that's not desirable.

WTF is wrong with people these days?
If it annoys you that bikes are going past you in slow traffic....then buy a bike and do it yourself. It's not rocket science and getting mad or trying to get even is primary school behaviour.
Just back from a ride this afternoon myself, with about 2 miles of filtering past stopped cars due to an accident. Straight up to the front of the queue then waved right through by the police cleaning it all up. Nobody in the stuck traffic opened a door to try and kill me, and I bet a few people thought "wish I had a bike".
This thread seems to have gone on a while for something that almost the entire planet thinks is perfectly acceptable. Like all riding, just keep your wits about you and scan for hazards constantly.

Is there a word for people who explain things that they know nothing about ?

Gotta be honest...not sure where you're going with this.

Many things seem crazy until you do them.

The only thing that's ridiculous is you not understanding that running a red light is illegal, and people doing it on purpose know they're creating great risk for themselves and others. However, someone sitting in traffic, stopped, who opens his door, is doing nothing illegal, and it would never cross his mind (understandably) that he might be putting someone at risk.
Yes it is illegal.
22517. No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side
available to moving traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so and
can be done without interfering with the movement of such traffic,
nor shall any person leave a door open on the side of a vehicle
available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than
necessary to load or unload passengers.

Some people think riding a motorcycle is crazy. "Donor-cycles!" Yet we all still do it. And I'm willing to bet that those people who think riding a motorcycle is crazy probably have never ridden one before, either.
