Tar Snakes
#22
There is a hill on the Chief Joseph Highway between Cody and Beartooth Pass enroute to Redlodge Montana that is a Tar Snake pit of the west. Everytime I go on it I think it couldn't get much worse. One of the prettiest rides in the country but I sure hate that section.

Michelin Commander IIs are pretty good tar snake killers, I'm finding now that I have them on.
But even the best tires just can't slay the evil ones, I suppose.

Good lord they are everywhere on the roads around here. I've actually encountered a few roads not far from my house recently where you could barely see the original pavement, the road was literally COVERED with them.

We have some roads here in AZ that look like that. Spooky when it gets real hot.

No, that's a "tire" snake.
Thankfully, upstate NY seems to have been phasing out the tar sealing the past few years. That's because they've phased out any and all road maintenance along with it. Roads here are the worst they've ever been in my memory, and the state is doing absolutely nothing about it.

We just got done with a 2,000 mile trip on the Road Glide Ultra and wet tar snakes are just as bad especially in the fast curves of the interstates. The roads we were on, 99% of them, were pretty good as soon as we hit the MI state line, holy crap. Just about got sucked into a washed out pavement seam that parallels the road. Yep, tar snakes wet or dry, you gotta pay attention or you're going to pay.
