Just wondering if anyone else has had to get a different insurance co. after doing any mods on thier bike. Went to re-insure my bike this week and because of the mods I have made, my present company wil not insure it anymore. I had to hunt around today looking for a company that specializes in custom motorcycles. I did have it insured for it's book value and wanted it increased from $6500 to $10000. they said no . Has anyone else had a similar problem? I actualy found another company that specializes in custom bikes, and my insurance, even with the increase in value, went down by $70.00 per year. I should have checked around last year and saved more money. How often do you folks get quotes from other companies. I think we all get a little complacent with our insurance carriers. I will now get quotes every year, and compare them for ALL my insurance needs...Mark...

Nope, wasn't a problem. Never hurts to shop around--just make sure you're comparing apples to apples on quotes. Which means, spell out what you want coverage for and how much of it when asking for a quote. In other words, tell them what you want and then ask how much. Don't say "full coverage." I want comprehensive and collision, $100 deductible, 100/300/50 on liability, etc. Otherwise, you could wind up paying less and getting less.

The coverage was exactly the same, comp , specified perils , collision. $500 deductable. Go figure .

I recently switched to Progressive, 100/300/100, $250 deductable, comp/collis/, basically the works along with covering $3000 in extras, $336/year.

With GEICO all they did was add a rider for an extra $3K in modifications and away I went. I shopped around because my cost went way up going from my 98 Suzuki Intruder 1400 to the Softail and EVERYONE was about $300 to $700 higher than GEICO.

As long as I have receipts to back up the accessories and upgrades Progressive will insure me for a reasonable amount...no limit on extras. In fact the more accessories I add the smaller the exponential increase in cost is. For example to add $5K in accessories could be an extra $200 per year and to add 10K in accessories could be an extra$250 per year...go figure?
