I'm pretty sure this will only work with Shovels, Pans, and Evos, as the oil filter is AFTER the motor, on the way back to the oil tank. Twinkies can't do this, as the oil filter is on the way to the motor.

Yes, it seems bass-ackwards to filter the oil on the way OUT of the motor. It's done this way because the older big twin is descended from the Knucklehead, which didn't have an oil filter. When H-D decided to add an oil filter, the only place they could add it, without redesigning the entire oiling system, was in the return line to the oil tank.

I think this is another example of people creating a problem where there really isn't one. We're not talking about the NASA Space Shuttle here, it's just a motorcycle! Drain it, replace the filter, fill it back up and get on with your life!

The shuttle program is dead, so yeah we're definitely not talking about that.

I could definitely see a need for getting rid of as much of the old oil as possible when doing a change though, such as when converting to conventional to synthetic.

I guess I don't see the harm in trying to improve something. Most of the stuff we do to our bikes isn't necessary anyway, so why bang on this?

Oil is the "lifeblood" of your bike, so why skimp if you`re inclined to do something extra for the care of it? It sure makes more sense than loud pipes or other things, although they have their own appeal.

No problem creation at all, just a few Harley enthusiasts expressing their preferences and sharing useful tips - how can that be a problem.

If it was essential then MoCo would be doing this, particularly on machines that are still under warranty and they are servicing.
It can only be beneficial, not detrimental, so why not go to the little more effort when changing your oil.

You are driving you bike for potentially thousands of miles with 'dirty' oil I'd imagine that's doing a lot more 'damage' that way than having a half quart or so of it left over when you change it. If you are THAT concerned about it I think changing the oil more frequently would be better for the bike than getting the last bit of dirty oil out. The new oil starts to become dirty right away as well and you run it that way for thousands of miles.

I do it much the same as the video ......

Drain oil
Remove old filter
Disconnected return oil line and slide on clear tubing
Screw on oil puck
Add two quarts of oil to the tank
make sure that the flex clear tube is discharged into a jug or old quart bottle.
Start the engine, wait until it's discharged +- 1 quart to waste
Remove oil puck
Add some new oil to the new filter and screw it on
Top up oil tank
Start engine and confirm oil idiot light goes off promptly
