Why are people either afriad or overly-polite when I am riding?

Have you ever noticed this...
I realized it years ago...If I am in my car and in regular clothes I am treated normally. When I am on my bike and I have leathers on, peopleare sometimesafraid to make eye contact and make sure they leave a more-than-normal amount of clearance space when they are walking past me. Others are OVERLY polite and hold doors for long periods of time till I can get to them. They are sacarin sweet!Sometimes it makes me laugh.....
Are they afraid I am going to kill them because I ride a bike?

Never happens to me. What does happen is I get pointed to the safest parking spots, am let on the ferry first, doesn't matter when I arrived, and am often complimented on the bike. I also notice that more strangers want to talk when I'm on the bike than when I'm in the car.
You must just be a scary, smelly guy.

Some people just have not adapted to the thought that most riders are normal, ordinary people with regular jobs, some suits and some professionals. Hell if they want to extend extra courtesies to me, all the better, but I always go way out of my way to return the favors, , say thank you, etc. Things have changed, I remember riding in the seventies and being turned away from hotels, both here in the US and in Canada when we took long trips.
I am not a RUB (well maybe), put a lot of miles on the bike, and love to ride, so does the wife, so the better we are treated, the beter we like it.

That's odd ... I have heard people say just the opposite. Until I witnessed it myself, I wondered about it. But, yep...I've seen it first hand. Pull up to a gas station or parking space in front of a convenience store (those seem to be our most usual stops when travelling) on a bike ... and as soon as people make eye contact they want to chat. Often comments like ... 'nice bike'..'where ya going'..'where ya been'...oh, did I mention 'nice bike'. I've found people like to chat it up with bikers. It seems they find it quite intriguing.
Drive up in a car, and that's when I find you're lucky to get a least a smile or a nod. That's when I find peopleseldom want tostop& chat.

Punishergirl and I had been out riding all day and I got a little wind burn on my face and lips and wanted to get some chap stick or something like that. So after dinner we throw on the leather jackets and hop on the bike for a short ride to Walmart. we walk into the store and you would have thought Moses was there parting the Red Sea the way everybody parted andgot out of our way as we walked down the aisles. It's so ridiculous sometimes it's damn near sublime. There are a few who do try to be nice to you, but if your even look like some kind of biker they think your a hard *** and won't even look at you. And this is just at Walmart the Redneck Macy's, the birthplace of the Mullet.
