Howdy Ann, I can understand where you are coming from. When you are riding your Sporty, you have a hold of the bars and you are in control if something happens unexpectadly. When you are a passenger and something happens you can't compensate for the problem and that bothers you, am I right? I think that sometimes when a person makes that transition from passenger to rider, it might be hard to go back. I think that there's nothing wrong with feeling the way that you do, it might just be natural. Don't worry about it. Enjoy the ride

Anne,

My wife who has always been a passenger does great. I on the other hand can't stand to ride on the back. It seems like once you learn to ride you can't go back to the passenger seat.

Wife rode on the back of mine for about 2 weeks. She is now on her 2nd Harley and will never go back.

I do both. Our first trip (to Arizona) on my husbands Heritage softail, (before I got my own), we travelled double. I saw stuff that he and our travelling companions didn't see at all. I took pictures of stuff they drove right by and didn't even know it. I like to ride double because you can see sooo much more. BUT...on the other hand...I love riding my own too.
Long rides, I prefer my own...short, around town riding I like to double. We can snuggle and chat about what we see. I like that part of it.

Once you get in the front seat it's real hard going to the backseat. I'd rather stay home than ride on the back!!!!!

I don't remember ever taking the backseat on a bike. When I am a passenger in a cage, I go to sleep or read. I have been a navigator on road rallys but there the navigator is control and the driver just does exactly as you say or you find another driver.

I agree with you, Annie, it's hard to go back to the backseat! Been riding my own for about 3 yrs now after riding passenger with DH for 10 yrs. Now the only time I ride with him is when I need a ride home from the shop if my bike's in for service. It SUCKS! Part of the problem is I'm a control freak--I'll be the first to admit that. The other part of the problem is I learned to ride in the MSF beginning riders class, and by reading Proficient Motorcycling. Now my H is an old school guy who learned to ride 30 years ago, by just riding. So now when I passenger, I get freaked out by everything he does "wrong" according to what I learned in MSF. Stuff like sitting in neutral at stoplights, tailgaiting trucks, passing on the right, etc. And he doesn't much like to ride me on the back anymore either!

Annie,

I hate to ride passenger anymore. I have jumped on the back of my husbands a few times since riding myself. I don’t know if it is a control thing or not…might be. I just feel like he does not ride the same way I do. He rides closer to the center line than I would. I brake sooner than he does. It drives me nuts. I never felt unsafe while riding with him UNTIL I got my own bike. Now I almost don’t feel safe on the back with him. Maybe it is control????????? All I know is I don’t like it!
